Villages of the Lower Oiapoque
Instead of asking people to travel to care, we brought care to them.
How it began
In Brazil's far north, where the Oiapoque River draws the border.
This is home to the Karipuna, Galibi Marworno, Galibi Kali'na and Palikur-Arukwayene peoples. About 10,000 people, in villages far from the state capital, where reaching a surgical center has always been a journey.
+Visão decided to reverse the route. Instead of asking people to travel to care, we brought care to them.

The problem and the goal
By road, by river and even by air.
Teams, equipment and a mobile hospital set out to reach the villages of Kumenê, Kumarumã and Manga. Forty-three professionals, including doctors, support and logistics staff, so that every cataract and pterygium surgery could happen safely, within the territory, respecting the pace and history of each community.
Impact
Before every surgery, listening.
A survey in the villages identified who needed care and what the needs were. Only then came the consultations, the exams and the operating room.
For many, it was the first time cutting-edge eye care had come so close to home. An unprecedented action that shows what happens when care goes to meet those who are waiting.
